Welcome to the first of a new series of articles about “A Day in the Life of…” where we give you a ‘behind the scenes’ look into the lives of our dedicated team members. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Rebecca Bruce, one of our Managers and Dispensing Opticians. Rebecca has worked with us since 2018, and plays a crucial role in ensuring that your experience at Opticare is nothing short of exceptional…

Q: In a sentence, can you tell what is it that you do?

I manage the patient journey, ensuring they have a wide selection of frames, excellent appointment availability, and receive friendly and personalised service.

Q: Describe a typical day at work

A typical day for me involves greeting patients, handling NHS paperwork and administrative tasks, assisting patients in selecting new frames and lenses, making frame adjustments or repairs, organising contact lens deliveries, preparing clinics for upcoming months, managing staff schedules, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the clinic.

Q: What are you responsible for?

I closely monitor clinics to optimise appointment bookings, making sure our optometrists’ time is used efficiently and patients have convenient availability. I also ensure that our staff is well-trained and updated on the latest styles, lenses, and innovations so that we can provide the best recommendations to our patients.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

The aspect I enjoy the most is the exceptional teamwork among the staff. We work cohesively to provide the best care and service to our patients.

Q: How did you end up in this job?

After completing a different degree at university, I realised I wanted a career change. I started as an optical assistant and quickly fell in love with the job. This inspired me to pursue my diploma to become a qualified dispensing optician, and eventually, I also took on the role of a manager.

Q: What qualifications do you have?

I am a qualified dispensing optician FBDO (Fellow of the British Dispensing Opticians) and am currently in the process of training for my chartered management diploma.

Q: What time do you typically start and end your workday?

We open the practice at 9:00 AM, but I usually arrive around 8:40 AM to prepare for the day. I finish up around 4:30 PM.

Q: Are there any specific projects or initiatives you are currently working on?

Currently, I am focused on my management diploma training, which will further enhance my skills and abilities in running our clinics efficiently.

Q: How do you prioritise your work and manage your time?

I believe in tackling important tasks as they arise to prevent a buildup of work. Flexibility is key, as unexpected matters often require immediate attention. Adapting my schedule to address urgent needs helps maintain a smooth workflow.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role?

As I oversee multiple practices in Leicester, my main challenge is ensuring the seamless operation of each location. This involves guaranteeing top-notch patient service, staff satisfaction, and consistent refresher training. Additionally, we’re working on enhancing staff training to provide exceptional service as we expand into new areas of optics, such as myopia control.

Thank you for joining us on this virtual journey into Rebecca’s day as Manager and Dispensing Optician at Opticare. We hope you’ve gained valuable insight into the dedication and hard work that goes into providing you with the best eye care experience possible. Stay tuned for more “A Day in the Life of…” glimpses of our Opticare team in action!
